16 April – Memorial Day for the Victims of the Hungarian Holocaust

Since 2001 on 16 April each year the Memorial Day for the Victims of the Hungarian Holocaust has been held in the country remembering the unprecedented cruelty towards the Hungarian Jewry during the Second World War. The Memorial Day was initiated by Zoltán Pokorni, former Minister of Education on 18 January 2000 (55th anniversary of the liberation of the Budapest Ghetto), who declared that 16 April be remembered at schools all around Hungary, as in 1944 on that day Hungarian authorities (under German supervision) launched the mass ghettoization of the Jews.
