Diplomatic relations between Hungary and the Vatican established 100 years ago

Formation of strong ties between Hungary and the Holy See served as a prerequisite of Hungary's accession to the community of Christian Europe more than 1000 years ago. One of the major steps towards this goal was when Pope Silvester II formally acknowledged Hungary as a sovereign Christian kingdom and legend has it that he personally sent the Holy Crown to the First King of Hungary, St. Stephen I. In the 20th century, it was Count Mihály Károlyi's government that had first attempted to establish diplomatic relations with the Vatican, but eventually – owing to the turbulent historical circumstances of the time – the official opening of diplomatic relations was delayed until the early Horthy era.
