Hungary's first Penal Code Bill
The social and political changes induced by Ferenc Rákóczi's war of independence gave way to the rejuvenation of legislative endeavours to establish a proper penal codex, non-existent in any form in contemporary Hungary. As a result of these efforts, deputies discussed (and eventually rejected) the first Hungarian Penal Code Bill (Codex de delectis eorumque poenis) of 1795 written in Latin, the first edition of which (published in 1807) is to be found in the Library's Rare Books and Manuscripts Collection.
