The Euratom Treaty came into effect 60 years ago

At the beginning of 1956 a committee chaired by the then Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs, P. H. Spaak was formed in Brussels to investigate the possibilities and criteria of establishing a common European market. On the basis of the findings and suggestions laid down by the committee, the two founding documents of the European Economic Community (EEC), referred to as the Treaties of Rome were formulated and ratified by the 6 original member states of the community, Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. One of these treaties was the Euratom Treaty that came into effect 60 years ago, on 1st January 1958.
