The origins and build-up of the library's unique classification system
The need to search libraries' holdings emerged as early as the 19th century. In the age of information technology it seem inconceivable that there was a viable way of browsing library catalogues by subject without computers. Library classification systems were and are usually based on a specific scientific taxonomy adjusted to the given library's scope of collection and user preferences.
